Compassion Gardens

April 5th, 2010

The idea of having a community garden is one that I have dreamed about for many years.  Whenever someone tells me that they are working with a community garden, I immediately see what I can do to help bring that dream to fruition.  In the last month, I have been presented with two opportunities to see that dream become reality.  First, last month, I met a hero named Josh Chilton.  Josh and his dad, Ski Chilton, are building self-sustaining community gardens in Masoyi, South Africa.  Specifically, they are building Community vegetable gardens for children who become orphans due to a devastating 35% HIV infection rate.   When I met Josh, I was gratified to meet a kindred spirit, someone who helps not because they have to but because they want to make the world a better place.   I knew that we had to help because we are part of the world community and by helping people help themselves, we, in this part of the world alleviate the burden we sometimes feel by the suffering of so many across the globe.  Josh & I decided that we would be able to help best by donating 10% of all the proceeds of our No Fear All Natural Insect Repellent to purchase materials and provide education for the gardens.  In addition to providing financial assistance, of course, I will be giving my time and experience in the world of gardening.  It is truly gratifying to know that somewhere on this earth, someone’s life is made easier as a result of  the information I carry around in my head.  That makes me glad.

When it comes to eating right and exercising,
There is no, “I’ll start tomorrow.”
Tomorrow is disease…
But today well lived
heals both yesterday and tomorrow.
